Should a goal scare me?

We’ve heard everything… If your goals don’t scare you, then they’re not big enough…

Maybe. Something I like to think about is this:

With my past achievements that I am proud of, I think, if I had known I was going to accomplish this, I would have been way more nervous.

For example, the first time I won an event at a big swim meet, swimming the fastest time I had ever gone in my life, I was not expecting it. I went into that race seated fifth. I expected to finish fifth – middle of the pack. I had never won anything at a big swim meet, and never thought I could… To this day, I am still proud of myself. And if it had been my goal to win, it would have intimidated me. It would have challenged me. And it definitely would have scared me.

But I don’t think that would have been a bad thing.

Don’t we deserve to challenge ourselves to our full capability? Especially when it’s something we are passionate about?

I’ve heard people say: “Don’t let your goals scare you,” but shouldn’t they, at least a little bit?

If a goal doesn’t intimidate you, even just a little bit, it might be too easy.

You can definitely set an easy goal; it’ll give you a checkbox to fill in once it’s attained. But with that easy goal, set a more difficult one… Something that will take hard work to reach. Something that you know you’ll be proud of.

Because you deserve to be proud of you. There are few feelings more fulfilling than true, honest pride in your own hard work.
